UNEP to Host Global Efficient Lighting Forum in China this Year

This year, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), an enlighten initiative will collaborate with International Energy Agency (IEA) and UNEP Global Efficient Lighting Center to host a Global Efficient Lighting Forum in the City of Guangzhou, China in early September.

It is a well-known fact that having an efficient energy system is the best option to reduce CO2 emissions and this includes effective lighting solutions. Efficient lighting is also the best cost-effective solution towards reducing CO2 emissions. In order to achieve this, UNEP has taken the onus to initiate dialogue and awareness among the government bodies, private sector, multilateral institutions, technical institutions and civil society.

This forum is a progressive initiative for the key stakeholders to learn and discuss about best practices and the challenges that transition to efficient lighting pose. It is also an opportunity to learn about benefits of transitioning to an efficient lighting system. This is also a platform, where a consensus can be reached with regards to technical, policy and financial measures required for a worldwide transition to efficient energy solution.

A global roadmap will be put together at this event, with a plan for all countries to make a quantum leap to implement energy efficient lighting systems. The forum will also work towards identifying opportunities, methodologies, tools and concrete actions that would aid in such a transition. At end of this event, partners and key stakeholders will reach a consensus to accelerate the phase-in of efficient lighting solutions, across the globe in all sectors, as an effective measure to reduce lighting-related carbon emission by the year 2020. A global status report on efficient light will be published in late 2013, with topics and recommendations put forth by the forum members.
